DR 3rd diamond Ambiori Mercedes lives in the suburbs of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. You will quickly notice that he is actually one of the key players in our festival. I've known him over 10 years and I can guarantee him to be the most honest and humble Dominican. He is an excellent dancer, but that's not the reason to call him a diamond. He is the diamond, because he knows the autentic bachata better than anyone else. That's why his artistic name is "El que sabe" - he knows.
Knowing autentic does not mean of what the foreigners (most propably) would think it would mean. Ambiori is not a "dance engineer". He doesn't count. He doesn't memorize. Instead he lives, he lives autentic bachata life. He has been living autentic bachata life right from the beginning. He started to dance bachata 1 year old. That's not a miracle. Most of the Dominicans start dancing before they start walking. Ambiori knows virtually all the Sto Domingo bachata dance places. He knows how to behave in these places, which actually isn't that obvious for foreigners. He knows the reason of why to go there and believe me or not, none of the foreigner have any idea of what is happening in these places and the "autentic" reasons to dance bachata.
Ambiori has many Ambiori will be your personal guide to autentic Dominican style bachata during the whole festival. Ambiori is one of our official quality inspectors, checking and verifying if the right elements, styling and music interpretation is used. He is always available for dancing and helping you in the details. He will explain the behavious rules and take care of your security. He will help the attendees to get chances to dance with Dominicans. Ambiori will have his own workshop, but mostly he will see him as a part of the others workshops.
Ambiori will be the first one to explain the complexity of dancing to the music. People who are new to autentic, believe dancing to the music means keeping the leg rhythm 1-2-3-tap. LOL. First, the Dominican rhytms isn't in the legs, it should be in the chest! Dancing to the music has very little to do with rhythm. Whatabout doing the learned turn patterns and dips in a certain order?? No!! There aren't turnpatterns and dips in autentic! LOL. Dancing to the music is interpreting the music by the means of dance. Is it slow music = slow dancing, happy music = smiling, sad music = crying ?? No! LOL. It's not that easy. The complexity starts from the music instruments, analyzing the sections in the music. Then comes the Dominican dance communities, with their habits to use certain elements and styling with certain songs. Each song will have different set of elements and styling. It would take several years to teach all the combinations. We try to decode just few different kinds of songs to give you a solid idea. That will be a huge task and involves a lot of concentration from everyone.
